By measuring the original gravity (gravity before fermentation) and the final gravity (after fermentation) you can calculate the ABV% of the liquid using a calculator
This hydrometer has scales for specific gravity, brix and potential alcohol.
Note, that this will not work to measure the ABV of a spirit once distilled. For that you need a proofing hydrometer.
