Aniseed (also known as anise or anix) has a distinct flavour similar to black liquorice.
NOT to be confused with star anise. Star anise pods have a star shape, while aniseed seeds are much smaller. Their flavours are similar. But Star Anise is slightly more herbaceous with a slight umami character.
Aniseed is used to add a liquorice like flavour to many distilled spirits such as Ouzo, gin and Absinth. Our suggestion is to macerate it first and then distil the liquid.
